I have the honour to request that you will kindly recommend, and forward this petition of mine to His Excellency the Governor requesting that he will be so kind as to grant to me the same privileges as to salary, duty, and promotion, and a chance of getting on the service same as all the other subordinate Civil
Servants in the Colony are having.
I most respectfully beg to bring to your notice that I am the only subordinate servant in the Colony who has no future to look forward to, and there appears to be no promotion for me. My maximum salary of £180 per annum is far below the minimum of
other subordinate servants some such as Police and Warders start as
low, but all have promotion, to look forward to, in due time.
A policeman can rise to the rank of Inspector, and a
good percentage of them to the rank of Chief Inspector at a salary of £360 per annum, and whilst they hold the rank of Police Constable, and Sergeant get as much as 860 or 270 a month extra for Fire
Brigade and Theatre duty. In the New Territory and out stations
they get special allowances and do 6 hours duty as compared with
me, 12 hours duty daily in the Lunatic Asylum. A warder can rise
to the rank of Principal, and a certain percentage to the rank of
Chief warder in time.
A sanitary Inspector can rise to £270 per annum.
